Prepper Radio Net Chat 09/13/23

Ken...possible question to use with / after your paper...Those of you listening tonight that are members of ARES and SNARS, can you share how membership will provide benefits to preppers in the event of a serious emergency?...

Hi Curious...

Welcome JC and Dave

Hi Intrigued

JC @JC Wed Sep 20 7:37 pm

Hello!!!!

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Sep 20 7:47 pm

David, I will say something about your question above. Call on me before you call for the initial round of check ins.

Hey Jerry, is your radio working with the repeater there in Winnemucca?

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 7:49 pm

Negative. Not yet. Though I will say I did not try to see if the repeater was working and just not connected to the system

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Sep 20 7:49 pm

Key up the radio and listen for the repeater's squelch tail.

If your repeater is working and we don't hear you we will know the link is still down.

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 7:50 pm

I forgot about tHAT. It was not last week because I did remember to check. I will get it out and try again.

Negative again.

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Sep 20 7:55 pm

We will discuss Nevada Shakeout

Negative what? No repeater?

https://www.shakeout.org/nevada/

The Great Nevada ShakeOut - Get Ready!

https://www.shakeout.org/nevada/

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 7:56 pm

Negative test for squelch tail.

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Sep 20 7:56 pm

Is there anyone you can contact locally about their repeater?

I will put it out on the noon net.

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 7:58 pm

I talked to him hear while back. He said they were working on it best they could. He is going to let me know if/when the .067 repeater is up and when the ling is up, as well.

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Sep 20 7:58 pm

Ok

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 8:07 pm

I plan to be at Ft. Churchill.

Kilo Seven Kilo Kilo X-Ray Checking in from Winnemucca through NNPG chat. Jerry

twp @twp Wed Sep 20 8:10 pm

I also plan on being at Ft. Churchill.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:10 pm

Up here in the backwoods of the far north many if not most people are preppers to some extent. So being a member of the local radio club and ARES I have access to like minded people and thus people who can help and very importantly multiple information sources,

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 8:11 pm

I have not participated in a couple of the recent Big Nevada Shake-out events due to health issues. Bad enough that I simply could not do anything.

I heartily recommend the event with turning off or not using water, power, sewer, and the like.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:13 pm

Accurate information is vitally important during a disaster. Also ARES members are part of the County Emergency Management office and thus will be working in the EOC as well as being part of the information net.

JC @JC Wed Sep 20 8:13 pm

I'm still in a new area and though I know some of my neighbors are various levels of peppers, I haven't really opened up much with what we are doing. So not sure if any other are radio operators

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 8:13 pm

I understand that no one wants to lose the contents of their refrigerator or freezer, but simply not use them and cover them over. Do not turn off the natural gas if you have it or it is required to have the company come in to relight pilot lights.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:15 pm

Jamie, when talking to them mention we are Hams and most likely if they are they will say so.

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 8:15 pm

For those two organizations, some of the members are vast resources of information on not only running a radio, but about the local systems that are available. They also know local shelters, where to get help and where to go if you can give help.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:15 pm

Or say you are interested in amateur radio

JC @JC Wed Sep 20 8:15 pm

That's a great idea, thanks dad!

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 8:16 pm

The main thing is their knowledge base for much more than just the radios. Antennas are critical to radio operation and many of them can give information and instruction to help one operate mobile and under emergency conditions.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:16 pm

Since our population is not large if you get into some of the organizations you meet the same people.

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 8:17 pm

I prefer Kholher, but they are somewhat more expensive and harder to find.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:17 pm

Generiac is the only maker that will guarantee an off grid unit.

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 8:18 pm

Kholher has made medium to huge generators for business and industry.

For many years. Generac is much better than they were 20 years ago when my experience with them was less than steller. Now, with what I am hearing they are much better.

And look at what they are saying. If it is just general 'I do not like them' there is more to the story. Often having to do with personality conflicts, not the equipment itself.

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid Wed Sep 20 8:22 pm

Short and sweet tonight...Good evening everyone

twp @twp Wed Sep 20 8:22 pm

Thank you David, I'm out.

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 8:23 pm

I am recovering from some minor problems the last few days so I am calling it a night. Hope to talk next week. Stay safe everyone.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:23 pm

Jamie, did your deer show up today?

JC @JC Wed Sep 20 8:25 pm

Not the beautiful buck. Just a couple mamas and their babies. I'm going to feel bad when I put up the fence to keep them out

:frown:

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:26 pm

You will have to look at their mournful faces as they gaze hungerly at your fruit trees and lawn.

JC @JC Wed Sep 20 8:27 pm

So mean!!!

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:27 pm

Yes you will be.

JC @JC Wed Sep 20 8:29 pm

Rude.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:31 pm

Well, on that note I need to go deny someone's voucher before calling it night. Good night, sleep tight do not let the bed bugs bite.

JC @JC Wed Sep 20 8:31 pm

Sleep well!

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:32 pm

You also.

Prepper Radio Net Chat September 6, 2023

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Sep 06 7:42 pm
Hi People...

JC @JC Wed Sep 06 7:42 pm
Hello!

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 06 7:46 pm
Howdy

twp @twp Wed Sep 06 7:47 pm
We're Baaaack

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 06 7:49 pm
Ok, where is David and his 6 possible questions?
K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 06 7:50 pm
Hello all.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 06 7:51 pm
hello Jerry
K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 06 7:51 pm
How is the world up yonder?

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 06 7:52 pm
68 degrees and sunshine. Another week or two there will probably be 6 or 7 feet of snow.

Have almost all of the wood in for the nice cozy fire stove.
K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 06 7:53 pm
That time of year, I suppose. It has cooled down slightly in Winnemucca.
Fire for warmth is good.
I see people dropping in and out of chat time after time. Am I doing that as well?

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 06 7:54 pm
Yep. I really like the heat from and nice fire. Reminds me of growing up. We only had a fireplace for heat.

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid Wed Sep 06 7:54 pm
Hi & Welcome everyone

JC @JC Wed Sep 06 7:55 pm
We had our first fire of the season a couple days ago and it was wonderful!

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 06 7:55 pm
you seem to be good Jerry
K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 06 7:55 pm
It was wood stoves mostly, and then added a coal stove and one wood stove.

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid Wed Sep 06 7:55 pm
Possible question in addition to reading...Other than TNT handhelds, what other handheld radios can funtion as a repeater

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 06 7:56 pm
No wood stove, Mom would not stand for that, but nice fireplace.
K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 06 7:56 pm
Okay. Thanks. I was not seeing it from here, but I am not sure what happens with others.

twp @twp Wed Sep 06 7:56 pm
I dropped twice as I changed settings on the chat and live feed.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 06 7:57 pm
Do you light that TNT radio before or after it is in your hand?
K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 06 7:57 pm
Baofengs with just a factory repeater cord. Just about all the others with a custom cable.
Some do have to be either separated quite a ways or have a blanking circuit added to the patch cable to make sure no feed back occurs.
Thanks David. That explains that.

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Sep 06 7:59 pm
David, are you going to present the topic we had in our email?

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 06 8:05 pm
Chimneys have been swept, new propane heater installed today, cut more wood, and have 7 or 8 cords of wood for this winter.

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Sep 06 8:06 pm

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 06 8:07 pm
It is good to have a CO, carbon monoxide monitor, as well.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 06 8:07 pm
Is that your Covid protection Ken?

Quirky Pal @guest2520959 Wed Sep 06 8:08 pm
Great topic!

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Sep 06 8:09 pm
Getting my pellet stove flue swept this month.

Covid smovid

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 06 8:11 pm
BOh, one of those deniers! Big Brother will be unhappy
K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 06 8:11 pm
When it is time to have an extinguisher recharged, it is a good time to have everyone in the family or group use the one (or ones) that need service for practice before it is recharged. If the service person is there, they can explain details of each extinguisher and help you use it. The cost of the contents is minor compared to what you get out of the practice.

JC @JC Wed Sep 06 8:12 pm
Do fire stations provide personal guidance with extinguishers and escape plans?

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 06 8:12 pm
Good point Jerry. Also the local fire departments often put on fire protection demos.

JC @JC Wed Sep 06 8:13 pm
You're reading my mind, Idaho!

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 06 8:15 pm
Extinguishers yes, not sure about a plan, but our Prepper show that is coming up on Oct 14 and 15

There will be info there.
K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 06 8:15 pm
I have worked three major house fires when I was on a volunteer service. Let me tell you, it is scary inside a burning house. Hard to see and without an oxygen system, really difficult to breathe. All I had was a respirator mask and I was only able to clear two room in one house and three in the other two since they were not as completely involved. Remember, you are not a pro and do not know the techniques to stay alive. This is especially important concerning overhead fire when ceilings catch fire. Which is often.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 06 8:17 pm
My safe is rated at 75 minutes, but I sure do not want to test that.
K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 06 8:17 pm
Only keep a few keepsakes on display. Keep all the rest in fire safe storage and rotate them occassionally. That way you will not loose everything. And make copies or take pictures of video of everything you really do not want to lose.

JC @JC Wed Sep 06 8:18 pm
Well Big Tobacco took care of that back in the 80s I believe and had all of our furniture and mattresses covered in chemicals so they don't catch on fire as easily
K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 06 8:18 pm
If one has a two or three story house (or more), make sure you have an escape ladder the right length to get down. Teach any children how to use them as it is not the same as a solid ladder.

JC @JC Wed Sep 06 8:19 pm
The self cleaning component on ovens is also responsible for a lot of house fires
K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 06 8:20 pm
If there are pets, and they are on an upper floor, you have to make the choice. Your life or theirs. However, if you have a rope and sling you can escape and then lower the animal. It takes special rigging to do so, but it is not difficult.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 06 8:20 pm
Hurricane oil lamps also quite dangerous. They put out a pretty good light and if watched they are good. Just have an extinguisher nearby.
K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 06 8:21 pm
Do not deep fry turkeys or anything else inside a home. Including inside a garage. Once that grease is hot, it will spread like burning water if spilled.
If there are any open flames used inside such as candles, fireplaces, lanterns, stoves, etc. obtain one or more fire blankets just in case someone winds up catching their clothes or night clothes on fire. It will likely safe the person from terrible injuries, as well as prevent a house fire starting.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 06 8:23 pm
I get my chimneys swept annually.
K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 06 8:24 pm
Some dryer vents use plastic hose, which is even more dangerous.

JC @JC Wed Sep 06 8:26 pm
Just bought some fire blankets! Thanks, Jerry!
K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 06 8:27 pm
While I was too young to remember it, our house was burned to the ground and we lost everything. The community helped us out and no one died, so we got through it, but my older sisters and brother said it was a terrible time.
Kilo Seven Kilo Kilo X-ray checking in from Winnemucca via chat.
Children will forget much more often than most adults.
So is baofeng.
Just needs the appropriate cable that baofeng has available

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 06 8:31 pm
David, contact Bob Miller, he is in SNARS and is the local ARES coordinator.
K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 06 8:32 pm
Cross band repeating is easier with input on 70cm and re-transmit on 2meters. Less interfernce.
Always use good candle holders if using candles. Also, get some earthquake putty and use a glob to secure lamps and such to a table or shelf.
I agree Ken. I was referring to very short term use in a real emergency.

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid Wed Sep 06 8:36 pm
Jerry...are you still coming to town this month?
K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 06 8:37 pm
Planning on it. Probably come down the 12th for an appointment on the 13th.

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid Wed Sep 06 8:41 pm
Ken...I tried to check in just now
K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 06 8:41 pm
Is it me, or is the system really noisy tonight?
I do not think Ken can talk and read at the same time David. lol

JC @JC Wed Sep 06 8:42 pm
This was a very informative topic, thank you everyone!
K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 06 8:43 pm
It was, JC. And
David did a great job presenting it. He knows his stuff.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 06 8:43 pm
It is a topic that should make everyone think long and hard about their home.

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Sep 06 8:44 pm
Good night all

JC @JC Wed Sep 06 8:44 pm
Most definitaly!

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 06 8:44 pm
Good night all. Be safe and NO SMOKING IN BED.
K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 06 8:44 pm
Yes. And for anyone that is going to build a place should really consider fire prevention and protection incorporated during construction.
Good night all. Stay safe.

JC @JC Wed Aug 23 7:46 pm
Hello! I'm great! Just working on house projects. Having some Master Gardeners look at my sad fruit trees. Living the dream! The fog was so thick this morning you could literally taste the salt from the sea
 How are you?

David - K7DWW @k7dww Wed Aug 23 7:47 pm
Doing good! Getting close to completing the inventorying and reorganization of my preps here at home/garage. That has been far more work and time-consuming than anticipated.

Ken...can I attach a document/file to this chat in some way?

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Aug 23 7:49 pm

Yes, but especially after I lost Audrey, things got messed up. And it's time to fix things up

Thanks Ken

Do outside watering at night to reduce the amount of water lost to evaporation.

JC @JC Wed Aug 23 8:12 pm
Oh man! I learned that the hard way! I was watering the trees in the day and saw the evaporation! I immediately stopped and waited for a few hours

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Aug 23 8:13 pm
It is quite amazing how much water my roof collects even during a little sprinkle.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Aug 23 8:14 pm
Using the fish tank water to water plants is like an aquaponics system.

JC @JC Wed Aug 23 8:14 pm
But doesn't roof run off have pollutants in it?

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Aug 23 8:14 pm
Yes, including bird poop but one must expect to clean the water before using it.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Aug 23 8:14 pm
That is why you filter it if you intend to drink it. For plants no.

activated charcoal, sand and gravel does wonders

JC @JC Wed Aug 23 8:17 pm
I also make sure to use the water I've used from boiling eggs/pasta/steaming vegetables, in the garden and indoor plants

I'm thankful that my head feels pretty evenly round. Because as a woman, if shtf I'm shaving my head immediately!

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Aug 23 8:21 pm
Then you can draw a face on the back of your head and people will think you are looking behind you.

Hey Keith...Thanks for mentioning the need to filter/purify water from roofs. Essential step.

Ken...I'll call you tomorrow. Thanks for the net tonight.
