Wise Human @guest2209494 Wed Aug 02 4:10 pm

Possible question: How do you make sure to properly rotate your perishable supplies?...

David - K7DWW @k7dww Wed Aug 02 7:33 pm

Great question

Hi Ken

twp @twp Wed Aug 02 7:39 pm

Hi ken, David and everyone else

David - K7DWW @k7dww Wed Aug 02 7:43 pm

Hi David, Hi Kind Guru

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Aug 02 7:45 pm

Hi all

David - K7DWW @k7dww Wed Aug 02 7:47 pm

Ken...for second question..."what steps can you/do you plan to take to minimize your chances of being injured during an emergency event.

Hi JC...welcome

JC @JC Wed Aug 02 7:47 pm

Hello everyone!

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Aug 02 7:48 pm

Yes, that's good too. Hi JC

David - K7DWW @k7dww Wed Aug 02 7:48 pm

Is there room for two to "drop and cover" under the desk?

Hi Jerry

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Aug 02 7:49 pm

No, this is a personal prepping item.

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Aug 02 7:49 pm

Hello all.

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Aug 02 7:49 pm

Hi Jerry

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Aug 02 7:53 pm

Answer to how do I make sure I rotate perishable goods?

I check the perishables each month to check the preservation date, expiration date, use by date, or any other date the manufacturer placed on the item, or the rotate by date I placed on the item when I received it.

Answer to question how do I minimize injuries or plan to minimize injuries??

JC @JC Wed Aug 02 7:56 pm

I keep a spreadsheet of all I have and include the perishable goods dates so I just look at that occassionaly and rotate when needed

I also update a printed version I keep with the stuff

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Aug 02 7:57 pm

Good job !

twp @twp Wed Aug 02 7:58 pm

To quote Ol'Remus: Stay away from crowds.

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Aug 02 7:59 pm

David, maybe talk more loudly. Your audio is getting weak.

David - K7DWW @k7dww Wed Aug 02 7:59 pm

ok

JC @JC Wed Aug 02 7:59 pm

I'm curious what every one is planning on doing when dental issues come up?

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Aug 02 8:00 pm

We did a full net on dental. Stand by for a link....

JC @JC Wed Aug 02 8:00 pm

Cool! Thank you!

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Aug 02 8:00 pm

First is I do my best to stay in the best physical condition and mental health condition as I can. Second, since my physical health is not that great, I try to be extremely careful during any and all situation that can be construed as being prepping related or potentially dangerous, I keep my operational security at the highest level I can maintain for various timeframes. I do not let that make me too tired or weaken me in other ways. Third, I always have several means to defend myself if I cannot get away from a living danger.

Perfect! I'll give that a listen, thanks

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Aug 02 8:01 pm

You're welcome.

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Aug 02 8:03 pm

Fourth, which should actually be first, I suppose, I do try to avoid or correct situations that could cause me injuries. Fifth I am always scanning the area when I am out and about looking for suitable spots to take shelter for high-risk situations and others for the lower-risk situations.

Sixth is maintaining food, water, and medical supplies so I can keep my health up. Seventh, I keep my family and friends advised the best I can so it I need some help to avoid injury one or more of them will be by my side as quickly as they can.

Kilo, Seven, Kilo, Kilo X-ray. Jerry, via chat, in Winnemucca.

Welcome Tony

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Aug 02 8:12 pm

Hi all !

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Aug 02 8:12 pm

Answer to question three, what are my plans for dental problems during times regular dental services might not be available? One, Since I did not take great care of my teeth over the years, and my family genetically tends to poor dental conditions, they are in very poor shape. Only five were pulled over the years and all the rest have broken off or split off just above, at, or just below the gum line. Now, I try to take the best care of what is left. Two, I keep various medications and treatments to deal with dental issues. Some commercial and some home made. I also have a decent set of dental tools, though I do intend to get several more. I have many written works on how to care for teeth.

KK7JQS @KK7JQS Wed Aug 02 8:13 pm

what about weevils in food how to prevent

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Aug 02 8:13 pm

Not that I know but probably have lots of booze to help when dental work becomes necessary outside the dental office.

Aren't weevils a source of protein? hahaha

Icky

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Aug 02 8:14 pm

In reference to Ken's rotation of his glass jars of his pre-made meals, he stated it is on a slightly slanted shelf, and he does not have too many jars in the line to keep from getting the first one in line off the shelf due to pressure from those behind.

KK7JQS @KK7JQS Wed Aug 02 8:14 pm

I guess id eat them if it came to it.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Aug 02 8:14 pm

Ken, are you building one of those cabinets that the old stores had for storing thread spools and such. Also are you recording your construction so others could build some like yours?

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Aug 02 8:14 pm

That's why we store ketchup and mustard !

KK7JQS @KK7JQS Wed Aug 02 8:15 pm

patriot food 72 hour kits. lots of them...lol

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Aug 02 8:16 pm

Keith, I don't know about the cabinet. I can't remember seeing that. I won't be recording. Too little time left over. I'm not yet retired.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Aug 02 8:16 pm

Keep equipment in good repair, know your limitations, plan so you have as much time as possible.

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Aug 02 8:17 pm

KK7JQS @KK7JQS Wed Aug 02 8:17 pm

live a life of preparedness. constantly getting stronger and smarter..every day...

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Aug 02 8:17 pm

.... what JQS said !

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Aug 02 8:19 pm

eLook at some old time general store pictures. My maternal grandfather owned such a store. You put the containers in a channel that ran down and at the bottom the channel flared out so the bottom container stopped and when removed the rest moved down due to gravity. Usually had a glass cover so you could see how filled the channel was.

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Aug 02 8:20 pm

Thanks, I'll do that. Cool !

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Aug 02 8:20 pm

A coke machine uses a similar setup

twp @twp Wed Aug 02 8:21 pm

Jerry reports that his computer has shutdown, He's working on it.

KK7JQS @KK7JQS Wed Aug 02 8:25 pm

been looking at the mammoth overland trailers. they are pretty impresive

self contained

maybe slightly overkill but gosh. they are neat

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Aug 02 8:26 pm

Get what you can. That sounds wonderful! I have seen those.

David - K7DWW @k7dww Wed Aug 02 8:26 pm

Sounds outstanding

Good night everyone...

JC @JC Wed Aug 02 8:26 pm

Oh, I would love one of those trailers!

KK7JQS @KK7JQS Wed Aug 02 8:26 pm

I like the idea of being self reliant first. then able to support 2nd.

off topic but does anyone know where to upgrade to general online.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Aug 02 8:30 pm

I do not believe you can do general or extra test online. Only in person testing

Attached are a couple of .pdf files with some of my thoughts about EMP, HEMP, CMEs, Faraday Cages, and other related subjects.

Some information is duplicated, but EMP and EMP protection is highly misunderstood by many, with all kinds of 'expert' conflicting information and advice, so I have included as much as I can without it being to difficult to absorb. I hope.

If there are any questions or suggestions please feel free to post them here.

Just my opinion.

Attached is a .pdf file with some of my thoughts on alternative communications systems when radios cannot be used.
In addition to those in the attachment, here are a few more that can be used, as long as a plan is developed ahead of time and all users understand it use.

1) Bread bag ties: Bread bag clips are color coded for the day the bread or baked goods were produced. Various companies use various colors for the days, so there are many color options available. Those in a group keep all the tabs they acquire and a code system is developed so placing a certain color tab in a certain place, or a combination of tabs, can convey from simple to sophisticated information.

2) Odors & smells: While masking or eliminating cooking smells is usually a good idea during a major event to avoid hungry people showing up on your doorstep, the use of various easily created odors can be dispersed in various ways to indicated some type of information. It would need to be fairly simple and easily recognizable. Probably be best if those in a group have a training session or two to allow everyone to experience each of the odors and link a message to it.

Depending on weather conditions, the wind mostly, odors may not be very effective at times. Especially some of the more subtle ones that might be used. However, the odors do not have to be dispersed into the air in quantity. Often, just like a drop point, applying a scent to something that will hold it for a while at a specific location that those in the group would be passing during regular activities can be used in the same way.

3) Directional lights: Much like a heliograph or signalling light, low powered lights such as LEDs can be mounted in one end of a small diameter pipe, which is then carefully aligned with a location so only someone in that direct line of sight can see the light. Various colors or patterns can be used. If care is taken to avoid any light leakage or splash at the end of the pipe, it will be next to impossible for anyone to see any light at all, especially if the inside of the pipe is coated or painted black so there would not be any light reflected inside. This can also be used with inexpensive laser pointers but there can be a significant risk if the person on the receiving end is not wearing laser protective glasses. Plus, a laser passing through any type of dust, fog, etc. can be seen quite easily and the source located. Plain LEDs are not as susceptible to this as lasers. Two way arrangements can be set up if needed or a message relay system used to pass a message down a line of senders/receivers. While using an interrupter to form dits and dahs with the light would work, the low levels and risks of missing something are too high in my opinion to risk it. Simply a different color of light and arrangement of more than one light can get specific information from point A to point B, with little chance of interception.

4) Specific activities or actions at specific times and places: Many things tend to be done on a fairly regular schedule, such as washing clothes. In a major event, being seen hanging out laundry to dry at a different than normal time can be a signal that people need to take notice. Various activities and/or various times can mean different things. Again, mostly a broad signal that many people can see, but only those that know the code will understand the meaning.

If there are any questions or suggestions to add to the possibilities feel free to ask and include the ideas in a post.

Just my opinion.

twp @twp 6d
Hello All

K7KBJ @kjuenke 6d
Hello

JC @JC 6d
Hello!

twp @twp 6d
I've not been here in several years but Jerry lured me back...

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid 6d
Hi everyone

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid 6d
Ken...possible question...What advise do you have for alternative types of communcations in an emergency.

K7KBJ @kjuenke 6d
Ok, alternative to what? Radio?

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid 6d
Second question...what advise do you have regarding faraday cages to protect communications/electronic gear

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid 6d
Yes alternative to radio

twp @twp 6d
I'm getting a "Radio Offline" for the live audio feed.

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid 6d
I don't understand...can you elaborate

K7KBJ @kjuenke 6d
TWP, first thing you must do is refresh your browser before doing anything else. I know you might be using linux. There is firefox for linux.

twp @twp 6d
Re an alternative to radio comms, what kind of range is needed?

K7KBJ @kjuenke 6d
David, I like #1

K7KBJ @kjuenke 6d
#2 is also good

K7KBJ @kjuenke 6d
The range needed varies by circumstance and disaster, I would think.

Kind Creation @guest1738864 6d
OK, rebooted browser and I hear the audio feed now. Thanks.

K7KBJ @kjuenke 6d

K7IN - Paul @K7IN 6d
Without radio/call phones, you need to have at least one more person to communicate with. Line-of-sight is probably the next best means, strictly visual. The Navy used semaphore flags and narrow beam lights but, the latter requires electric power and is not very good during daylight. Sound-powered telephones, like the military used since WW-I, require a pair of wires and are only good for about a mile. So, other alternatives to radio require much more preparation and training.

K7KBJ @kjuenke 6d
thumbs up

Intelligent Chatter @guest1738895 6d
Hi K6ST

twp @twp 6dLight beam comms are primarily line-of-sight, unless you have prearranged set of mirrors on nearby mountains/hills/trees. Yes, they do require electric power to run LED emitters and the signal drivers. LEDs are low power (< 1Watt) unless you invest in larger arrays.

Intelligent Chatter @guest1738895 6d
carrier pigion

K7KBJ @kjuenke 6d
Yes Barry !!!

twp @twp 6d
I like the carrier Pigeon idea. You can also raise them for a meat source...

K7KBJ @kjuenke 6d
I forgot about that. It's actually a hobby for many.

Eager Creature @guest1738897 6d
WA6PBU checking in on the chat

K7KBJ @kjuenke 6d
Paul, how was my audio?

K7KBJ @kjuenke 6d
I have the mic gain set at 5, half way.

twp @twp 6d
RE the use of cellphones, you will need a power system to keep them charged, but they are readily available (now anyway) and you can stockpile them for all members of your community. Solar/wind/water power makes sense in an EOTW situation.

Ken, yes, I do use Linux and I have half a dozen browsers available. I'm using a Firefox clone, Palemoon. All is good now.

K7IN - Paul @K7IN 6d
Ken your audio was very strong this evening and your signal does very well into the repeater.

K7KBJ @kjuenke 6d
Thanks Paul !

K7KBJ @kjuenke 6d
Good to hear TWP

K7KBJ @kjuenke 6d
Thanks David. Good job

WA6PBU @Johann 6d
See y'all goodnight

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid 6d
Good night everyone

twp @twp 6d
RE Faraday cages, there is a YUGE set of information available online for many ways to make the cages. There are also commercial units available. I like the galvanized garbage cans, small to large sizes with a tin foil rim to seal the gap between the lid and the can. Jerry has information on this too.
